The always informative and interesting John Yoswick of the CRASH Network reports that Rhode Island is at the bottom of the list when it comes to the ratio of registered vehicles per collision repair shop, with Massachusetts close behind. Based on 2015 data from the Federal Highway Administration, there were 4,393 private and commercially registered vehicles for every body shop in Rhode Island, the lowest ratio in the U.S. In Massachusetts, the ratio was not much better, with 4,734 vehicles per collision repair shop, placing it third from the bottom (just ahead of North Dakota). In comparison, several western states have more than 10,000 vehicles per body shop on the roads. The figures do not include non-employee (“one man”) shops or dealerships.
